NASTF email concerning Ford IDS issues

John Owner Medford, New York Posted   Latest

I am extremely grateful that NASTF sent this email. Great job of keeping us informed. Keep up the good work. However, there are some items that concern me.

First off this issue is not just an anti theft programming issue. The issues with IDS are also programming issues with frequent "Testman Errors".

Ford has issued various update messages on PTS saying that they have corrected these issues. Then oh wait we didn't, etc. Now we are being told to wait for v.118.03 by NASTF. What gives?

Why has it taken all this time for Ford/Rotunda to finally own up that IDS is broken? Something many of us have know for close to a year. We have been told by support every excuse under the sun about how it was WIN7, it was not running IDS Cleanup, etc. Now we are being told to offer an apology to our customer and wait for the latest fix. Let me know how that goes in the real world? Are your customers going to believe you that Ford has an issue and its not you?

The reality is the last stable version of IDS was v.113.06. I would suggest the "Ford Diagnostics Team" start there and look for what went wrong. This field testing that is talked about in the email. Who is doing the field testing? Will it really be fixed this time? Or, are we going to the beta testers for them once again at our expense and time? The right thing to do would be to make v.113.06 viable again when the current version doesn't work. If they need this version I have a copy :) At least until they actually fix IDS for real.

Again, I would like to stress the positives about some transparency that is finally happening. Kudos to those involved. But, the sting of lost time, revenue, and customer confidence with IDS still stings. I am apprehensive but hopeful that this will be rectified. I would like to have confidence in my IDS again. I know many, many who feel like myself.

I use the Windows version of Forscan for many tasks on Fords. The software is almost free, it's fast, and the interface cable is $60 on Amazon. If you work on Fords, Forscan is worth having in your toolbox, especially when IDS is being a PITA. forscan.org/home.html

Paul, I have and use Forscan on an almost daily basis. Forscan will not program calibrations.

John, I apologize I do not have answers for most of your questions. What I can tell you is that navigating all the recent staff changes within Ford has made lots of challenges. I, shall we say, "forensically" figured out who was who by following email strings and asking questions until the real boss stood up. This problem is not only with IDS and, as you are well aware, not only with PATS…

Donny what is the deal with logging in to coded PATS? Is this still requiring all the docs in SDRM for replacing a BCM?

Great question Bruce. To encourage more automakers to use an industry solution for Gateway/security validation NASTF allows them to choose if they require a customer authorization form (D1) to be created. Ford has chosen to require it. Others have not. My Question: Do you feel that the events they require it on and those they do not is clear? I see that they have changed some of the messaging. I…

Other than PATS access I have not seen any references in the service information for modules that require security access. I do believe there are several modules that require this access to program in FDRS but have not seen documentation that shows it as a requirement. Airbag modules specifically, I believe were mentioned on this forum for needing secure access for coding.

No, it is not clear... To get a keycode it is clear, you have to have SDRM credentials, but when programming a module, it doesn't show you need an LSID until you are 3/4 the way thru programming.. and then it is hit and miss whether you will need a D1 form.. and the data transfer from ford to NASTF isn't always the quickest, so sometimes you are backtracking trying to get owners info to fill out…

Let me see what I can do. I have a place on the new NASTF website where we could put just such a list. :)

Donny, Tim is correct it is not laid out clearly for module replacement. I have started compiling a spreadsheet and I have to tell you there are lots of inconsistencies. For instance same year Transit Connect BCM replacement. One vehicle needed LSID and the other did not. These were both IDS vehicles. I will not even get into the FDRS issues with module replacement or the issues with SYNCH…

John, I am going to respond to a couple of these and give you an update. "As I said in the past there needs to be a conference with representatives from the OE (that can make decisions and are knowledgeable) not puppets like in the past, us in the field that do this on a daily basis, NASTF, and other industry leaders and lets hammer this out. Don't you agree?" We have team ST meetings every…

Donny, So how do I get in on a ST meeting? When is the next one? Are the OE representatives in these meetings knowledgeable? Can they make changes? Or will it gets lost? You have told me in the he past that the OE's don't always have the right people in place for you to talk to. Do they now? I still think a conference that is taped with meeting minutes would be best. Just my opinion. I am glad…

We were supposed to have an ST call on Wednesday however my Dad just passed away so we shuffled it to next Thursday. Drop a note to Holly Wolfe … and ask her to add you to the Teams you are interested in. The information is on the NASTF.org website but it will be wrong as a result of the date change. The NASTF board approved visits directly to OEs 2 years ago and I…

I would have to agree. This has went on for much to long. When Fords is your most seen, it hurts when you start passing them up cause of the bull. Let us go back to 113 until you get it fixed for real. I myself have learned my lesson. I always stayed one update behind, even tho i hear tech's say dont update until you need to. I will be changing the way i update for sure. Sure wish i had an…

To add insult to injury, Ford has INCREASED the renewal cost of a broken IDS. They should be rebating us for the aggravation!

I must be getting old... I remember when all the OE's told us to pound sand when we wanted any info.... I am very appreciative of anything organizations such as NASTF, SEMA, and the other organizations that are helping us independants get info... Not saying they are doing the best job at it, but it wasn't that long ago none of us were able to buy TRP parts from Mercedes, now it's a weekly…

Andrey, I don't see v.118.03 to be downloaded on any Ford link. Are you sure you have v.118.03? Are you beta testing for Ford? Donny, do you have any comment on this?

The page to download on the public side has not updated, but the page linked from the Motorcraft/PTS site side has the 118.03 link. Try the link below. It might not open but its worth a shot. fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/I….exe

launch the flex net connect on your PC. search under windows for Flexnet or look under ford in the start menu for check for updates. It will download from the updater before it is posted to the site. The updater normally runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays for some reason. diag.net/file/f20d8gb74…

Chris, I didn't bother checking Flexnet because NASTF was supposed to notify us of v.118.03 release. Which they did just now. I will be holding on to v.117.xx until it times out. I have heard that IDS is "fixed" one too many times to be confident. Be well.
