2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5L (EJ253) (TR690)
P050A - Cold Start Idle Control System Performance

Hello All, I am trying to find out if I can/should program this Subaru. There is a TSB (11-102-11R) for the P050A cold start fault code for a programming update. We have an AEZ Flasher2 from Drew Technologies and I would like to purchase the CD from Subaru that has the J2534 programming files. I have programmed other makes just not a Subaru before. Any thoughts from your experience is most appreciated.

Subaru is very easy to program. Just order the disc you will receive it in a few days it works well with Drewtech devices very easy to do

They are pretty straight forward Jordan. If you don't want to go through all the trouble and since you already have a Jbox there you could use the remote service and have someone do it for you right now. bluelinkdiag.com/programming

Subaru is easy and quick. Setting it up and figuring out how to use it may take an hour or so but if you’ve done much programming at all you should be able to figure it out. Most times you will need to connect the green check connector under the dash. That’s usually the hardest part of the job.

They're pretty easy, I use the SSM3&4. with Subaru's Flashwrite software. I do an All-Module Scan and save. Clear codes. Good battery, clean connections, volts between 12.7 and 13.2 +/- .2, you should be fine. Over or under volts, the software will let you know. Do you actually have the P050A code and symptoms ? I've been doing applicable updates regardless of code or symptoms. I can't…

Thank you Hollis. I have the P050A stored with the MIL on, but there are no symptoms/complaints from the owner of the vehicle.

TSB 11-135-13 Refer's to a false setting of code P050A. Applicability in the heading doesn't show the Outback model, but if you scroll down, one of the first listings indicates 2011 Legacy / Outback models, may be worth a look. You can purchase a 72 hr. subscription to STIS for under 40 bucks, search 'Re-Programming Files' it has the latest Flash info last updated 7/2019. Have fun!

Hi Jordan: I think that you may've left something out of your post and your thought processes. Has this 8 year old TSB reprogramming already been done? If it has been and there is not a newer file for THAT particular issue, you very well may end up trying to push a string. I suggest verifying the current calibration and then see if there is an update before doing anything else. Also, if you…

Thank you Guido. Great point to verify the current calibration. I have not done so on this vehicle yet. I do know better than reprogramming a module just because I can ;) My main concern for the post was to see if J2534 works well for Subaru ECM programming. We try to only use factory tools for programming (Techstream, wiTECH, Ford IDS, ect) but it is hard to justify the cost of the Subaru…

Hi Jordan: I'm glad to see that you picked up on the importance of that. I see too many people waste money attempting to do things that have already been done. (In your …e, $75.) While I haven't gotten calls lately, I used to get a lot of calls to reprogram vehicles based upon 8-10+ year old TSBs. After I stopped shaking my head, I'd ask what the current calibration is. In most …es. the…

Hi Anthony. Seems I may be missing more than I thought with Subaru Reflashing. 'Do No Harm' is my primary approach. When we purchased the SSM3 and the FlashWrite Software in 2009 from a licensed / approved distributor we got a day class with a brief introduction to it, no hands-on and that was it, the SSM4 purchased from the same company just showed up in the mail. I'd love to learn the proper…

Hi Hollis: Two Disclaimers: I have no occult track of Subaru (or any other OEM), per se. Most of what I am going write should taken as conceptual in nature. You very well may be doing these things correctly. My response is not meant as a reflection on you or Jordan. It is to offer a mindset of taking what you know and applying it to what you don't know as an answer to the question that you…

Hi Hollis: Did you miss Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin and Cookie AutoDelete? What can I say? I'm a very trusting individual. ;) All kidding aside. You raise a good point. This is a house box. I don't put anything on a production machine except out-dated versions of Java, SVG Viewer, IE, etc. You know, stuff that proves the box is insecure. Guido

All SSM uses for reprogramming is flashwrite which you will get with the CD. With the CD you ARE using the factory “tool”

Jordan, I have one more question for you. What percentage of your business is Subaru? Reason I ask is if it is a small portion of your business taking a bunch of time to figure it all out yourself is notable but does not make good business sense in the end. You could be working on other jobs while someone else helps with this one. Its why mobile techs, and remote services can help you in…

Bob, This is actually the 4th Subaru in 6 months I have seen with this specific fault code. I cleaned the throttle body on two of them and the code has not reset, one still set the code after the throttle body was cleaned, and now the 4th one this week. So I would like to gain the knowledge and capabilities in house to handle these going forward. I can definitely see where you coming from on…

Jordan that is great, Exactly where you need to be. I had to ask since getting stuck on the oddball things that you never see again is bad for your business. Best, Bob …
