Transmission No Forward Or Reverse

I was leaving work last night on my 2012 Chevrolet equinox with 258000 miles and came to a stop sign and then tried to move onto the side street and I got a rpm flare and no forward movement in the vehicle. I put it neutral and a passerby and I pushed it to the side of the road out of the way. I tried putting it again in drive D and all manual gear selections to no avail. I called my friend who is a former GM tech and he said to hook up a scan tool and see if it had any dtc's. I used my ESCAN and laptop which I had in the car to check IAT and ECT were the same at cold soak for a thermostat issue earlier in the week. I did at DTC scanand found none stored unfortunately. He said clear them anyways and let it set with the engine off for a few minutes to see it would work again for a short time. I did that and got the transmission to work for a very short distance like 300 feet and got neutral again. I repeated the procedure once more and got to the parking lot and I heard a faint whining noise but reverse gear did not work at all. I put it neutral and pushed it backwards. As I am not a red oil man what should I be looking for quick checks? I am presuming I need a reman transmission at this point.

See what data you can get from the transmission. It sure sounds like hard parts in the transmission have failed. With that many miles I would almost suggest a used transmission. You would have to exchange the TCM or install a new one as the Global A vehicles are VIN locked and may give you codes for a VIN mismatch.

Hello Michael Christopherson, Thank you for the feedback on my vehicle. Murphy sure has been coming by a lot for me recently. A gm SRTA is about 2500 dollars, ouch !! Is a Jasper a good reman unit also?

Jasper is a good unit and the warantee is really good too. LKQ has reman transmissions. Keep in mind you will need to program the transmission control module before operating the vehicle. -Mike

Hello Michael, Thank you for the real world experience. Can I just take the tcm out of the old unit and put it in the used or reman transmission?

If you buy from Jasper they send a RAP box along so you can reprogram the TCM if needed.

Did you actually verify it was not out of fluid for some reason, like a cooler line leak? Otherwise, the pump could be making noises because the filter is plugged up with some clutch material.

Hi David Robin, There is fluid in in the unit and no leaks. Although the fluid is dark and full of metal so it is rebuild or replace time. Too bad I just put in a GM radiator last month. I do not know if the cooler in the radiator can be flushed out or not. I have some decisions to make none of them inexpensive.

I have had some older models do the same thing when the trans cooler was in the radiator that was restricted.

Fluid must be available at the pickup filter at all times or the pump starves. Most transmissions for the last 15-20 years have had a bypass circuit for the cooler so there is always flow in and out of the main transmission along with lubrication. Cooler system is usually the supply for the lube circuits and affects converter in/out flow. So an internally blocked cooler is a bigger problem than…

Hello Tony Presley, The radiator is a gm part and about a month old.

We do a ton of these with same problem. Something has come apart inside your trans and is stopping filter up. When u shut it off, the debris drains out of filter and It will pull long enough for the filter to get restricted again. If it has no reverse even when it still pulls forward, the wave plate inside is probably broken and the resulting metal destroys the 3-5-reverse clutch. You'll def…

Hello Mike Westerfield, Thank you very much for the feedback on these transmissions. I am getting a GM SRTA from Pontiac Michigan warehouse. I told the shop they need to flush the cooler and lines very well. He said they have a flush machine but it is not heated. I told him to flush the crap out of it. I do not want to have to fix this again.

The transmission was replaced with a GM SRTA unit. Hopefully I will not have any further issues with my car. The trans cooler and lines were flushed out with a flush machine and three cans of cooler cleaner just in case. The transaxle computer was reflashed. Thank you everyone for the feedback !!
