Not Recognizing Vin

Hello fellow techs. I was called out to do a strategy relearn on this f550 but it does not recognize the vin. I try using the tear tag but then it redirects me to vin not found in previous session.

On another note when I try to enter the vin manually it only allows 15 characters in the window and 3 in the tear tag(it allowed me once) I reset the laptop and still nothing. Was wondering if anyone has ever come across this. Thanks, Gery

Hi Gery, I think the F-550 is in the medium duty category and requires different programming tools and programs.

Glenn is correct. i cannot confirm but I have been told to use VCM3 with a special adapter for 2016 and up medium duty.

The ability to only enter less than the required amount of characters is a ids side effect of having the windows icon size setting above 100% right click the desktop and select display settings… its in there

Thanks Scott. That is very possible and didn’t think of it.

It most likely has a programmer. The other software is only for the 650-750. I was using IDS on a 2019 2 days ago with no issues.

Thanks Paul. That’s possible about the tuner but it’s a company trunk with a huge tanker on it but like I said anything is possible.

Try entering last 8 of vin if done plenty of f550’s with ids and no special medium duty software. What exactle are you trying to do? Is it when you are trying to communicate with pcm you are seeing this or are you trying to reprogram it? Trans shift strategy is usually done by programmable parameters not module programming.

Thanks Michael. Trying to do transmission strategy relearn but it won’t even let me into the vehicle.

And just to be sure…. This thing doesn’t have a gps or anything hooked up to the obd (y cable possibly unplugged)? If it’s not letting you in I’d hook up another scan tool on it and see if you have coms with other modules and see if there any communication codes…

Somebody put a tune into it. Unless you have a cummins or cat in it (which would be a f650 and up). Vcm3 not needed unless you go HD route which won't apply to that vehicle. Get the story straight from your customer.

Thanks Kevin. Not sure about the programmer considering it’s company truck with a huge tank on it for waste management

You an have the egr component still in place but have a tune to disable it. (It's quite common) especially with extensive idle time knowing the small exhaust bolt snap in the manifold and turn into a nightmare. Check for stock exhaust or delete would be the starting point. If that's the case, then I don't know if you need to update PCM which I would not even attempt to do. If that's for a…

Assuming all of the emissions components are intact? I've had vehicles with aftermarket ECM calibrations show up like this in IDS or show up as the wrong vehicle altogether….

Please try: Special Function Ecu programming Install old ecu Follow insruction On and off Install new ecu Follow instructions On and off On again. Finish programming Now you can amend vin on new ecu.

Have you tried clearing the session files in IDS to eliminate the redirect to a previous session and get a true fresh start on the program?
