No Reverse Or Park

Previous issue with OSS Malfunction Circuit, appeared to resolve itself, may have been terminal fretting. NOFAULT for OSS when live data checked.

Now the same vehicle won't go into reverse or park and still requires 4k RPM to even being to move.

This thing is really kicking my ass; I haven't had much time on transmissions, does anyone have a clue what could even cause this?

Thanks.

Jordan, more info needed. Does the manual lever shift through all the gear positions, or is the lever limited in movement? Does the trans appear to bind in Reverse, and drive in neutral? Also, if the gearbox is a limp/LOS mode it will start out and stay in a higher gear. The tale will be told when you pull the pan. JPS

Shift level all positions except 1, no Reverse light. No trans binding in reverse, it's just as if it's not there. Car runs and shifts 90% fine in D; got it out on the highway and shifts fine in forward operation only. There's just no reverse. Park might as well be neutral, does nothing.

If I understand correctly, no reverse and no manual lo. If the shift lever does shift to manual lo, and no engine braking in that position, and the lever does shift to reverse, and no reverse, the problem is with the LO/Reverse band. Probably a broken band. The park problem is an issue. As always, just a WAG. JPS

No engine braking/torque converter drag in any gear. Lever shifts to reverse but no reverse lights.

Good Morning Jordan, If I understand correctly, the shift lever won't physically go into the 1 position? Or if you put it in the 1 position nothing happens? What about if you stick it in 2 and try to take off? Does it move any better that way? Have you checked the fluid level and condition? Does it smell burned? What was going on when the OSS malfunction was occurring? If it's a PM sensor…

- Will not physically go into 1. - 2 and other manual selections require excessive throttle and then car will roll. The moment I let my foot off it stops - D will drive mostly like normal. - Fluid level will be checked when I can get setup to do so. - OSS P0720 Circuit malfunction. Code cleared and hasn't returned since fiddling with the wiring. Suspect terminal fretting. - OSS was…

Time to pull the pan. Sounds like a major break inside trans.

Check for a faulty or improperly adjusted MLPS(range sensor)

Sounds like your linkage is a detent out, and possible a misadjusted range sensor… and possibly internal issues as well. Disconnect shifter cable from trans, and with a helper in vehicle holding brake pedal, shift it using the lever at the trans. See if you get reverse then. Also, you can start truck, unplug range sensor and see if reverse is obtainable. P0720 can set in “no move” situations…

I went ahead and followed the readjustment process after reading your post. I was able to get the vehicle in reverse with rear indicator lights functioning as well. However, there appears to be excessive play between the REVERSE and PARK position when placing the vehicle in “Park”. i.e. the cabin shifter will go into PARK but will not move the shift selector out of REVERSE into PARK until I go…

Jordan Update

I finally managed to get the vehicle into REVERSE and positioned it off the ground for the test. Attached is a video of functionality. Is the video showing some functionality of the ABS/AdvanceTrac system? Otherwise I would assume it should just continue spinning consistently. Thanks, J.

At least we are getting somewhere. Play is easy to find with a partner in the vehicle. There is a possibility it could be ABS doing this. A few questions… Do you have a Trac Off switch? (If so, turn it off and see how it reacts. I have gone to the extent of pulling ABS module fuse to eliminate this as a possibility). Was truck in 4wd Auto? (If yes, try 4wd Hi, or better yet 4wd Lo because I…

Resolution Found. Vehicle had Compound issues: - OSS Sensor Circuit Malfunction seemed result of terminal fretting. - Selector arm on transmission was out of calibration. - Vehicle had both trans cooler line to radiator quick connects leaking and when performing trans service filled 9 quarts. Quick connect fittings were replaced and leak was fixed. Vehicle now appears to shift fine and…
