2016 Ford Focus TCM Reflash tip (used trany)
hey there just a quick question; when installing used trany in 2016 Focus--it requires to be reprogrammed because it or te car wont even start. we did these a few but always called mobile guy to program for us...i have J-Box i thought i can give a try myself. question; is there any issues or complications to set up Used trany to make PCM/TCM happy and make it work or need Ford Dealer Soft to do it. ( ive done bunch of Ford PCM/TCM reflashes/software updates for tsb n staff before---so im assuming its same simple. anyone done it? have tips?
FJDS should do the programming just fine, but the clutch adaptation is not in the J programming software. With a new TCM there is usually a worksheet for manual clutch adaptation and this works in most instances. There are other tools and software that have the clutch learn.
Car should start, you have other issues
I think my SnapOn Zeus should be able to TCM Adaptations no problem will see when my tech installs trany in it. ****as fur as Dewey Mark post: we did have instances where we put Used Trany (it comes with Its own Module on a side and car wont start at all—-once mo ile guy programmed it —started right up and drove shift gears fine...i know from past its a MUST to Program TCM on these Ford Focuses
Did you try bypassing the neutral safety switch with a jumper?
The transmission might have a sticker with solenoid ID and strategy. If it has the sticker, write the new transmission numbers down before installation (or take a pic). May be difficult to see once in vehicle.
Ford IDS has several different procedures needed when working on this trans. Clutch adaptations, shifter position calibration, something else. The last time I did it with a snap on tool it was combined into one procedure, but worked fine.
Here are a couple of screenshots of the adaptations.
Just as of curiosity if i get similar vehicle in future —-is it ok / is it safe / wont hurt anything-if i just practice go with scanner and do all there Adaptations on good vehicle? or Update software in TCM/PCM to see how it goes? Just go get some hands on experience...
IMO if there is no problem with the vehicle the TCM Adaptive Learning should not create an issue but it could reveal an issue that's about to occur, since these functions may be recommended in order to diagnose transmission components. Also IMO I would not update any module on the basis that there is an update unless there is a TSB indicating an update will resolve a specific issue you are…
Ok got it. If no problem than don’t create one. Thanx guys for all your input
Do you have communication with the TCM? Can you read P/N position? If it started with the old transmission reinstall the original module and restest There are some instances where the shift fork learn needs to be done to get the vehicle to start. I would recommend PMI of the TCM and run the clutch learn.
No issues yet---I just wana get some heads up before I do reflash in just a few minets....ill let you guys know how it went thru...
If your idle is too shaky(failed front mount), you might not be able to finish calibrating shifter positions.
hey there --bad news. i didnt get to do reflash--we were super slammed with work so my boss kept me on big jobs and hired mobile guy do reflash--i didnt even have time to walk up and ask how and hat hi did--i was him using RAP box from DrewTech--i know on there you cant really see much anyways--they black screen out or say Reflash in progress...anyways i missed it and feel sorry for i didnt get…
