Good Afternoon,

Can a used pcm be put into this vehicle and programmed to work? Is there a special theft code learn in procedure? I have a customer wanting to have us install and program this vehicle if possible.

Thank you in advance!

Yes if the pcm is the right part number a used one can be used. Just make sure you type in the right vin in sps. And select replace. And it will program it to that vin. After you will have to rest pats. You can do that through sps too. Theft relearn will take 11 minutes.

Thank you Justin. I am assuming that this can only be done with a tech2 or an MDI, but not any aftermarket tool?

Hi Terry, I have a laptop and Pass Thru ProIII. I downloaded and installed Tech2Win, but it doesn’t program modules. What do I need to download to program this module to this car?

What you will need is a SPS subscription through ACDelco it will cost $53 for a vehicle to program the vin on the new used module you have acdelcotds.com/subscriptions

Thank you Abdul. I have that subscription, and I have paid for one programming event. i have programmed gm modules before, but I wasn’t sure if I could program a used module as a new one-changing the VIN to the new car.

Yeah you could they've changed there subscription model to 24 months per vin But definitely that's the only way it can be done. Through SPS with a j2534

In my experience a used pcm can be done if the correct one, out of the same or similar make and model. The challenge with these and many mid to late 2000s' GM's is that you can get the proper PN / hardware service # from the salvage yard and still not be able to complete the programming, either failing the programming part or unable to get the security to learn. Sometimes this is not a issue and…

Absolutely you can put a used one in. Most of the time you can do a 30 min. security learn and the car will start and run without even programming it. However do not do that because then the VIN will be wrong and the ECM will do its job thinking it's still in the old car. There are many variables, your used ECM could be for 4 or 6 cylinder, E85 or non E85, Secondary Air or not Secondary air…

I am curious to know how the "Lack of Power" resulted into a PCM replacement decision...?

P1516 and P2101. The customer bought a new acdelco throttle body and installed it. Didn’t fix the car. He had the car towed to us with used pcm in the front seat floor and asked us to program it to the car for him. We did not do the diagnosis. All I have done is make sure that the wiring between the pcm and throttle body is in good condition, with no breaks or terminal damage. That’s all he…

Hi Caleb, in my replies I should have mentioned that many times that we were unable to get a used one to work we would get stuck with a P0513, Sometimes the security learn vai SPS would not even start so we would perform the 30 minute learn ( sometimes 40 for good measure). Please let me know if I am missing anything that could make our jobs easier! The last thing that I want to do is mislead…
